Pronghorn Decline Observed in Jeff Davis and Presidio Counties

ALPINE, Texas — Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) wildlife biologists recently recorded a considerable drop in the pronghorn antelope population in portions of Jeff Davis and Presidio Counties, although they said overall pronghorn populations in the Trans-Pecos remain only slightly below the 30-year average.

City and State to Open New Paddling Trail on Aug. 14 10.9-Mile Trail is A First in the DFW Metroplex

City and state officials will dedicate the new 10.9 mile Lake Arlington Paddling Trail at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008 at Richard W. Simpson Park in Arlington, marking the first Texas Paddling Trail on a lake and the first in Dallas/Fort Worth or any other urban area. Richard Simpson Park is located at 6300 W. Arkansas Lane.

TPWD Wildlife Director Mike Berger Announces Retirement

AUSTIN, Texas — Michael E. Berger, Ph.D., today announced plans to retire Oct. 31 as Wildlife Division Director for Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Berger capped a 40-year career by serving the last five as TPWD wildlife director, leading a team that greatly increased the acreage of Texas land under wildlife management plans, expanded public hunting and recreational opportunities, and improved science-based conservation.
