Bastrop State Park Wildfire Recovery

Bastrop County – Labor Day Weekend Events

Saturday, Sept. 1Rediscover Bastrop State Park, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. (512) 321-2101

Learn about the fire’s impacts to the park through exhibits, photos and first-hand accounts.  Find out what the future of the pines looks like and how you can help through guided hikes, exhibits and hands-on activities for all ages. Free park entry for the event.

There are two main purposes for this event:

  1. Explain what happened in the park during the September 2011 wildfire
  2. Encourage visitors to take ownership and help care for our natural resources

Toad Abodes:  Encourage kids to help take care of wildlife. You’ll help them paint flower pots to use like this at home:

Refectory:  Inside we’ll have artifacts recovered from the park, the LCRA fire video showing, photos, and a CCC exhibit.
Natural Resource booths: Booths with erosion, erosion control, prescribed fire and future plans for the park.

Guided Hikes: 2 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 3 p.m; (30 minutes to 1 hour each); half-mile to 1-mile hike through the burned area.

Sunday, Sept. 2 – Burning Pine Run at Bastrop State Park; 7:30 a.m. until approx. 10 a.m. in park, followed by and a Texas music concert from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the County Fairgrounds across the street from park)

This inaugural event takes runners & walkers through the beautiful & historic Bastrop State Park to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the devastating 2011 Texas wildfires — the largest in Texas history. Money raised from the 5k/10k and 1K family fun run and the concert after- party will be used to benefit Friends of the Lost Pines and the Bastrop YMCA to aid efforts to rebuild the state park and bring much needed health and wellness opportunities to the Bastrop community.

Sunday, Sept. 2 Commemorative Service; 2 p.m. at Bastrop Arts Center

A one- hour commemorative service hosted by the Bastrop Ministerial Alliance.

Monday, Sept. 3  Potluck lunches; noon to 2 p.m.

Bastrop County Potluck lunches to be held at area fire stations to honor the fire fighters and first responders.  Hosted by Bastrop Ministerial Alliance and each fire station.

Tuesday, Sept. 4 — Hyatt Lost Pines Dinner; (time TBA)

Dinner and speakers will commemorate the anniversary of the fire and money raised will go to the Bastrop County Long Term Recovery Team for housing.
