Grants Will Help Children Connect with the Outdoors

AUSTIN – Fifteen Community Outdoors Outreach Program grants from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department totaling more than $629,000 will be helping thousands of Texas children explore and learn about the states’ cultural and natural resources.

“At a time when children are more plugged into electronics, these projects connect them to the outdoors,” says Darlene Lewis, TPWD CO-OP program director.

The grants are being awarded to various cities, non-profits, school districts and other communities that have come together to focus on natural and cultural resource education for children. Participants in programs funded by these grants will have the opportunity to attend nature day camps or participate in outdoor recreation programs as well as service projects.

Currently, $1.25 million is available to eligible tax exempt organizations to help fund these types of programs in Texas.  Grants can range from $5,000 to $50,000. Applications for the next round of grants will be accepted through Feb. 1.
