Old Tunnel's Solar Eclipse FAQs
Two eclipses are coming to Texas, and Old Tunnel State Park is in the viewing path for both. Before planning to watch from the park, please read through these FAQs.
- Can I camp overnight in the park?
- No! Overnight camping or parking are not permitted on park grounds or along Old #9 Highway or Alamo Springs Road. The trail is open from sunrise until 5 p.m. You may not leave items in the park overnight to reserve your space. This includes areas along Old #9 Highway or Alamo Springs Road.
- Are reservations required?
- Entry into the state park is on a first-come, first-served basis. We won’t take reservations even for pass holders. We will turn away vehicles when the parking lot is full.
- How much will it cost to enter the park?
- Entry is free.
- Where can I park?
- Parking is permitted only in paved, marked parking spaces. Do not park on the grass or along or in roadways.
- Are there any amenities?
- We do not have a gift shop, office or running water. We do have portable toilets. Please bring your own drinking water.
- Can I bring a picnic?
- Yes, but we have limited facilities. We have three picnic table/shelter areas which will be available first-come, first-served. You can set up chairs in your parking space area, but you cannot set up a canopy or camp stove, or have a campfire. And remember, alcohol is not allowed.
- Can I set my chair out the day before to save a space or picnic site?
- Leaving personal property unattended is not permitted. We will treat personal property left overnight as abandoned property in accordance with state law and TPWD policy.
- Can I bring and set up a barbecue grill?
- No. We do not allow any kind of grilling at our site.
- Are drones allowed in the park?
- No, drones cannot be launched.
- Will we be able to get solar eclipse glasses there?
- No; please bring your own solar glasses.
- Are pets allowed?
- No, we do not allow pets.
- Are buses or RVs allowed in the park that day?
- No. To accommodate more visitors, we are not allowing RVs or buses during the eclipse.
- Will there be educational programs?
- No programming is planned.
