Hill Country Region Week of May 15, 2024

Austin

GOOD. Water stained; 73 degrees; 0.63 feet below pool. Water temperature is in the lower to mid 70s. The bass bite has been decent, but not as good as previous weeks. The wave of spawning fish is over transitioning the bigger fish to deeper water leaving a few small fish shallow. Small soft swimbaits, wacky rigs and shaky heads have been getting some bites shallow. The bigger fish are in deep brush, deep docks and deep natural shoreline. Brady

GOOD. Water stained; 74 degrees; 10.89 feet below pool. The water is stained on the main, and both creek arms are muddy due to runoff. Catfish are good on cut bait and worms shallow to 15 feet, on on jug lines or trotlines with live or cut bait. Black bass are slow with a few catches on spinnerbaits along rocky shoreline and brush. Crappie are slow. White bass are slow.

Brownwood

GOOD. Water normal stain; 75 degrees; 4.52 feet below pool. The lake level continues to rise and the water carity is dirty on the main lake and muddy towards the rivers. Black bass to 5.79 pounds are good on chatterbaits, shakyhead and crankbaits in 3-12 feet of water. Crappie are good with catches up to 13 inches under docks in 5-9 feet of water with black and chartreuse, or white with a chartreuse head jig in 5-9 feet of water. Some crappie are on brush piles using minnows in 10-12 feet of water. White bass are good on crankbaits and small swimbaits. Catfish are fair on cut or prepared bait.

Bryan

GOOD. Water stained; 70 degrees. The lake is full and anglers are reporting good catches of catfish on minnows. Report by The Bait Barn.

Buchanan

EXCELLENT. Water slightly stained; 80 degrees; 14.71 feet below pool. It has been another exciting week with the water rise. The water is extremely muddy on the North to mid lake and stained on the south end. Striper fishing is excellent using live shad as bait in the 25-50 feet of water. There has also been some good action early on topwater. White bass are biting excellent on live bait, jigging spoons, and topwater early. Use extreme caution while boating. There is a wide range of debris floating in the water and also just under the surface, and many of the exposed trees are now under water. Please exercise safe boating while on the water. Canyon Lake

GOOD. Water normal stain; 80 degrees; 22.67 feet below pool. Bass are good in the hydrilla with a chatterbait, and with a dropshot in deeper grass or main lake points. Report by Evan Coleman, Big Bassin Fishing.

Granger

GOOD. Water lightly stained; 65 degrees; 5.43 feet above pool. Black bass are fair on spinnerbaits fished in shallow cover. Crappie are good on jigs fished over cover in 12-18 feet of water. White bass are fair on slab spoons fished on windy points and roadbeds. Blue catfish are very good in the shallow flooded areas. Yellow catfish are good on trotlines. LBJ

FAIR. Water stained; 75 degrees; 0.43 feet below pool. Catfish are good in 20-25 feet of water on punch bait blues and channel. Crappie are fair in 20 feet of water on brush piles with chartreuse jigs. Report by Jess Rotherham, Texas Crappie Fishing Service.

Medina

SLOW. Water lightly stained; 70 degrees; 92.00 feet below pool. Few reports and anglers on the water due to limited access and low water level.

Travis

GOOD. Water stain; 70 degrees; 48.61 feet below pool. Bass are very active with numbers being caught in open water schools with swimbaits and jerkbaits. Report by Randal Frisbie, Central Texas Fishing Guide, LLC. Bass are on the verge of schooling action with fish feeding shallow along the bank and up in the water column off shore and around marinas. The bite will only improve as the water temperature rises. Topwater baits are working well as well as shallow crankbaits and wake baits. Waco

SLOW. Water stained; 70 degrees; 17.42 feet above pool. The Bosque Park ramp is open. A few reports of catches of crappie, white bass, largemouth bass and blue catfish. The U.S. Corps of Engineers parks and ramps are closed.

Walter E. Long

GOOD. Water normal stain; 75 degrees. Big groups of shad in the back of many coves, but bass are not blasting them. Bass are spread out between the reeds, grass, with bigger fish are biting on the deeper edges of grass, but there are not as many bites. The worm is still catching the most fish. Many techniques are working giving us options for going after them, but worms are still catching most of the fish. The weather has been cloudy and rainy with similar rain in the forecast. Panfish bite is still going strong. Crappie bite is good in deeper brush tops, and in the grass. Report by David Townsend, Austin Fishing Guide. Bass are good with the best bite on stick worms, but a small swimbait or jerkbait is getting some of the bigger fish. Bass are chasing big baitfish schools all around the lake.
