TPW Commission Meets August 20-21

On Wednesday morning, the Commission will discuss a number of items including the 2008-2009 Migratory Game Bird Proclamation, which will establish hunting seasons and bag limits for ducks, geese and sandhill cranes (More info). The Commission will also hear about proposed changes to Commercial Nongame Regulations and will be briefed on record low levels flounder in a Southern Flounder Update. On the financial front, the Commission will receive a Financial Overview that will include an FY '08 Financial Update, the proposed FY '09 Operating and Capitol budget and an explanation of the Legislative Appropriation Request (LAR), which will include our budget request for FY 10-11, along with exceptional item requests for additional funding above the base budget. The Commission will also be updated on the Sunset Commission Review.

On Thursday the Commission will take action on several items, including the FY '09 Operating and Capital Budget, the 2008-2009 Migratory Game Bird Proclamation and Commercial Nongame Regulations. In addition, the Commission will take action on grants for several programs which would provide funding for target ranges, local parks, recreational trails, urban indoor and urban outdoor projects and small communities across the state. The Commission will also be briefed on a new Keep Texas Wild educational section of the Texas Parks & Wildlife Magazine, which will be provided to 4th grade teachers in every school in Texas. They will also be briefed on the Sheldon Lake State Park and Environmental Learning Center.

Sunset Review Process continues

The Sunset review process for TPWD is proceeding on schedule. Sunset staff have met with TPWD representatives in about three dozen individual meetings. Five field trips have been organized and sunset staff has visited 14 TPWD field locations. Additional scoping meetings with Commissioners and Constituents are now underway. The Sunset staff report is expected to be published in November 2008 and a public hearing before the Sunset Commission is scheduled for December 16th and 17th. The decision meeting of the Sunset Commission is scheduled on January 14th.
