Pileated Woodpecker

Pileated Woodpecker

Trivia tidbit:

Colloquial name is “Indian hen” from the drumming sound they make out in the woods and the hen-like clucking they make when they are disturbed; commonly mistaken for the potentially extinct Ivory-billed Woodpecker; largest woodpecker commonly seen in North America (it is a crow-size bird that is roughly 17 inches long)

State Parks to Visit:

To see this eye-catching bird, visit Lake Tawakoni State Park, Bastrop State Park, Martin Dies, Jr. State Park and any other forested state park found east of the I-35 Corridor (not along the coast). Listen for the drumming on tree trunks and keep your eyes open for their bright red cap.
