Plant Life on the Salt Marsh
Woody Glasswort
Salicornia bigelovii
Woody glasswort can live in very salty parts of the salt marsh. Like a cactus, the glasswort stores water in its flesy stems and leaves. The plant uses the water to waken the salt water it takes in at high tide.
You can eat glasswort which is juicy and a bit salty. It belongs to the same family as beets and spinach.
