Boat Ramp Closed

Aug. 25, 2022 - The boat ramps are closed, and kayak rentals are not available due to the low lake level.

June 12, 2024 - The swimming area is closed due to high-water levels in Lake Wright Patman. Check back for updates.

Reservations Recommended

Jan. 1, 2024 - We strongly encourage you to purchase day passes in advance for the summer months, weekends, school breaks and holidays. Day passes often sell out throughout the summer.

Online reservations for overnight stays close at 4:30 p.m. 

Road Conditions

Sept. 3, 2024 - Access to the interior of the park is limited to high-clearance 4WD vehicles only.  The River District is open to all vehicles, however the Arenosa Campground is only accessible by 4WD.

Hydrilla Alert

July 12, 2024 - The lake is infested with hydrilla, an invasive plant that creates large mats of vegetation across the surface of the water. We are working on controlling and removing the hydrilla, but it can affect swimming, fishing and boating. Contact the park office with questions.

Please remember to always clean, drain, and dry your boat!

Sept. 23, 2024 - The park is open, but the equestrian area remain closed due to hurricane damage.

Visiting the Park

• We recommend reserving day passes for weekends and holidays. If your plans change, please modify or cancel your reservation so someone else can visit.
• Trails close for wet weather and maintenance. Call the park or check our Facebook page for updates before visiting.
• Argentine ants have been identified in some of our campsites. These invasive ants do not sting. Be prepared to treat around your vehicle and camping equipment. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is working to reduce the number of ants without harming the park's natural resources.

South Shore Boat Ramp Closed

Oct. 4, 2023 - The boat ramp at the South Shore unit is closed due to low lake levels.

Boat Ramp Use Limited

April 1, 2024 - The boat ramp is closed to boats requiring a trailer to load or unload due to low water level. Only kayaks and hand loaded/unloaded watercraft are allowed to use the ramp. Contact the park for more information. 

Scheduled Closures

The Coyote Run trails will be closed Dec. 7-22, 2024.

The Doctor's Creek Unit and the South Sulphur Unit will be closed from noon on Jan. 3 to noon on Jan. 6, 2025.

Dock Closure

May 10, 2024 - The floating dock in the Heron Harbor Day-use Area at the South Sulphur Unit is closed. The walkway to the dock has been removed due to damage. Fishing access from the wall is still open.

Trail Alert

Trails close to horseback riders after rainfall. Check conditions before you come by calling the park. 

Low Lake Level

Sept. 11, 2024 - The lake level is extremely low. The swimming area, fishing pier and boat ramp are closed. Contact the park for updates.

Museum Closed

Sept. 1, 2024 - The museum at park headquarters is closed for renovations.

Sidewalk Project

June 17, 2024 - Part of the day-use area will be closed starting in mid-August for a sidewalk improvement project. The swim/beach area and the back deck of the pavilion will remain open.

You may hear construction noise. Please observe all signs for safety. The project is expected to be completed in January 2025.

Scheduled Closure

The Limpia Canyon Primitive Area will be closed from 8 a.m. Oct. 5 to 8 a.m. Oct. 13, 2024. Only permitted hunters will be allowed on these dates.

Partial Trail Closure

Jan. 27, 2023 - The Indian Lodge trailhead is closed due to renovations at Indian Lodge and can be accessed from the Montezuma Quail Trail only. The trail is 1.5 miles round trip from that intersection. 

Renovations Closure

Feb. 6, 2024 - Indian Lodge, including the Black Bear Restaurant, is closed for renovations. Reservations for 2024 will not be available until a reopening date has been set.

Paddler Notices

April 1, 2024 - The Baker's Crossing launch is closed due to low flow levels in Devils River. The San Pedro Point launch is still open. Contact the park or check back for updates.

April 1, 2024 - The Devils Back paddler take-out is closed due to road construction. Permit itineraries that do not include Devils Back are not affected.

Upcoming Trail Runs

The Mammoth Race will be Saturday, Oct. 12, 2024 and the Dinosaur Valley Endurance Run will be Nov. 23-24, 2024. Trails will remain open, but please watch for runners on the trails and be mindful of race marking and flagging. Contact the park for route details.

Utility Work Notice

Sept. 4, 2024 - Utility work on the Armadillo Hill Camping Loop will continue through mid-2025. The restrooms and the dump station in the loop are closed. Restrooms are available in other areas.

Firewood Quarantine

May 16, 2024 - This county is under a quarantine to prevent the spread of the emerald ash borer to other areas of the state. This means movement of firewood is restricted.

Please buy firewood where you burn it to prevent the spread of diseases and pests.

Road Construction

Jan. 26, 2024 - Roadwork is underway on FM 1015 next to the park's entrance. Expect lane closures and redirected traffic; use caution when entering and exiting the park.

Fishing Piers Closed

September 23, 2024 - Both fishing piers closed for maintenance. These closures do not affect any reservations. Check back for updates.

Reservations are recommended (even for those with park passes). Reserve online or call the Customer Service Center before you visit. Spanish-speaking agents are available at the CSC. Carry your pass (either a printed or digital version) with you while in the park.

Construction Notice

Aug. 2, 2024 - A repair project on the scenic overlook on Park Rd. 29 will begin this fall. The project will limit access to the south side of the park (Old Garner). Pecan Grove and Oakmont camping loops and cabins will be closed from December 2024 to February 2025. Check back for updates.

Water Shortage

May 22, 2024 - Water conservation measures are in place due to drought. Please bring enough water for your visit. Water is available at the campsites. Public restrooms and campground showers are available.

Camping Restrictions

May 22, 2024 - Due to water shortages, we have enacted some camping restrictions.

• The campground is closed Tuesday through Thursday nights.
• Campsite availability is limited Friday through Monday nights.
• Campsite reservations are encouraged, call (512) 389-8911.

Restroom Closure

Feb. 22, 2024 - The restroom on the west side of North Mountain is closed.

Facility Closures

The Rec Hall, group lodges, and cabins will be closed for renovations starting on January 1, 2025. Renovations are expected to take about a year. Check back for updates.

Storm Damage

May 30, 2024 - The park is open, but suffered some tree damage in recent storms. Please stay away from damaged trees for your safety. Expect some equipment noise as park staff clean up the damage. Check back for updates.

Lake Closed

Sept. 27, 2024 - Out of an abundance of caution and per the recommendation of TPWD biologists and water quality officials, lake access is closed due to a presumed blue-green algae bloom.

The lake is closed to boating, swimming, and fishing, but the park remains open for all other activities.

Courtesy Dock Closed

Sept. 6, 2024 - The courtesy dock is underwater and not accessible, due to the rising lake level. Check back for updates.

Trailway Closure

June 1, 2023 - Part of the trailway, from FM 1195 in Mineral Wells to the Vietnam War Memorial, is closed until further notice. Please observe closure signs for your safety.

Birch Creek Unit Closure

The Birch Creek Unit and parts of the trailway will be closed on the following dates:

The Nails Creek Unit will be closed Oct. 21-23, 2024, for a Hunter Education class. All hiking trails past the Rocky Point turnoff will also be closed.

Trailway Bridges Out

May 1, 2024 - Two bridges on the Trailway have been washed out, one over Nails Creek and one over Yegua Creek near the Newman Bottom parking area. Please reach out to either Nails Creek or Birch Creek headquarters for more information before heading out on the Trailway.

Argentine Ants

Argentine ants, an invasive species, have been identified in some campsites in the park. The ants do not sting.

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is working with experts to reduce the ants without harming natural resources. Before leaving, thoroughly inspect your vehicle, RV, camping gear and other equipment; if you see the ants, please notify park staff immediately and they can offer guidance for treating. Camping Closure

Aug. 28, 2024 – The Walnut Ridge Unit bridge is down to one lane. Please proceed with caution. Check back for updates.

Closures 

September 17, 2024 - The lower part of the park is closed due to repeated flooding events.

Swimming, fishing, and day use along the river are unavailable until flood repairs and cleanup are completed.

Beach Driving

Sept. 1, 2024 - Only those with 4x4 vehicles should drive on the beach due to soft sand. Otherwise, you should park in the day-use parking lot to avoid getting stuck. 

Water Outage

Water will be shut off and bathrooms will be closed beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Oct. 10, 2024, for maintenance. The outage may last for a few hours.

Scheduled Closure

Most of the park will be closed Jan. 26 to Feb. 28, 2025, for a construction project on Park Road 11. All areas on the south side of the San Marcos River will be closed including all water/electric campsites, the main trail system, showers, the Refectory building/parking and picnic area. Limited day use and tent camping sites will remain open near Oxbow Lake. Contact the park or check back for updates.

Summer Trail Safety

• Temperatures in the canyon are often 5-10 degrees hotter than on the rim.  Outdoor activities during this time can be dangerous. Stay safe!
• Avoid hiking during the heat of the day.
• Stay on trails.
• Drink 1 liter of water per person, per mile.
• Hike with friends.
• The following trails will close from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. on days when the National Weather Service issues a heat advisory. Please observe these closures for your safety.

• Campsites with electricity and water, as well as the Twin Falls Trail, are closed through March 31, 2025, due to a wastewater treatment plant project.

Firewood Quarantine

May 16, 2024 - This county is under a quarantine to prevent the spread of the emerald ash borer to other areas of the state. This means movement of firewood is restricted.

Please buy firewood where you burn it to prevent the spread of diseases and pests.

Reservoir Levels Notice

Sept. 4, 2024 - Due to recent rains, the lake's level has risen and it has reopened for boating. The lake is near 8 percent capacity and one boat ramp is open. Watch for debris that may have washed in during rain events. 

Dump Station Closure

Feb. 6, 2024 - The Bald Eagle Campground Dump Station is closed for maintenance. The dump station in the North Concho Equestrian Campground as well as one on the south side of the park in the Red Arroyo Campground are open.

Sticker Bur Alert

We have lots of sticker burs in and around our campsites right now. Wear good shoes and be cautious with pets and children.

North Shore Gate Locked

Check in at the South Shore entrance (362 S. FM 2288) to get the gate code for the North Shore.

Park Closures

The Visitor Center and Park Headquarters will be closed on Thursday, Oct. 10, 2024, from 8 a.m. to noon, for staff training. Please use the self-pay kiosk, located in front of the Park Headquarters building, during this closure.

The Roadrunner Flat camping loop will be closed for construction beginning January 2025. Check back for updates.

Tower Closed

Sept. 9, 2024 - The John Jacob Observation tower is closed for maintenance. Check back for updates. 

Construction Notices

May 18, 2024 - Campgrounds, trails and bird blinds are open and accessible. 

• Construction continues on a replacement of the low-water crossing at the park's entrance. Access to the river for tubing, paddling, fishing and swimming is available. Watch for signs or ask park headquarters about temporary river access points. River portage around construction is clearly marked.
• Expect construction noise, construction traffic on the roadways, and possible road or lane closures at the park.

Office Closure

Park headquarters will be closed on Thursday, Oct. 10, for staff training. Purchase passes online before you visit or use the self-pay station.

Fall Forest Festival

The park will be closed for day use until 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 12, 2024 to set up for the Fall Forest Festival.

Free entry, free shuttles and free parking will be available at 1458 and I-10. Only handicap parking and campers with reservations can park their vehicles in the park.

No Water

Oct. 2, 2024 - The Cedar Point camping area, dump station and restrooms are without water. Portable toilets are available, and the Big Pine dump station is open. Check back for updates.

Sept. 30, 2024 - The park is under a boil water notice. Please be prepared to boil water or to bring enough for your visit. Contact the park for details or check back for updates.

Trail Closures

Some trails will be closed on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2024, for a special event. The Lakeshore and Whispering Pines trails will be open for visitors.

New Park Headquarters
