Egg-citing Day in Athens April 13 to Prove “Food’s Better Outside”

ATHENS—The Athens Eggfest returns to the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center on Saturday.

Experienced cooks—also known as Eggheads—will be turning out a variety of tasty treats all day long for visitors to sample. Everything will be prepared using Big Green Eggs, ceramic cookers that allow you to grill, smoke, bake or fry.

An Eggfest is the ideal place to learn whether you want to become an Egghead, since you will have the opportunity to observe people cooking a wide range of foods on Big Green Eggs—and you will be able to taste it all. Food will be coming off the Eggs all day long, starting with breakfast-type items in the morning and progressing to heartier foods as the day goes on. While tasting, you can learn how to cook on a Big Green Egg yourself.

“If you taste something you would like to know more about, by all means ask the cook,” said Leroy McMillin, an Egghead from Spring. “All Eggheads love to share information. Nothing is off limits; there are no secrets. We gladly share what we know.”

Even better, all the Eggs used at the event will be sold at a substantial discount, so you can pick one out and take it home with you. Event staff will cool the Eggs, remove the ashes and help you load them into your pickup truck or large SUV. Eggs weigh about 150 pounds. The entire line of Big Green Egg accessories will also be available for purchase.

To taste or to buy a once-used Egg, preregister at The fee for tasting is $5 for those who preregister. Tasting is available for $10 at the gate. All proceeds benefit the Friends of TFFC.

The Athens Eggfest is sponsored by Morrison Supply, Paragon Distributing, Brookshire’s Grocery and the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center.
