Celebrate LBJ Day on August 27 at His Namesake Park
STONEWALL – Come get your picture taken with a life-like cutout of the nation’s 36th president and enjoy other festivities commemorating LBJ Day, a state holiday, at Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historic Site on Wednesday, Aug. 27.
The 718-acre park on the Pedernales River, where Lyndon Johnson was born 106 years ago, will be decked out in red, white and blue in honor of LBJ’s birthday and the 50th anniversary of the Johnson Administration. The celebration will last from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and admission is free.
The National Park Service, which operates the LBJ Ranch and Texas White House just across the river from the state park, will have a wreath-laying ceremony at 10 a.m. at the family cemetery. The late president and his entourage spent more than 500 days at what was dubbed the Western White House during LBJ’s presidency from 1963 to 1968. It is open to paid, guided tours. However, for this one day, NPS will waive the fees in his honor.
Visitors to the state park can view a film about Johnson’s life in the Visitor Center auditorium throughout the day. They also can visit the Sauer-Beckmann Living History Farm from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to learn more about the president’s legacy and to participate in such old-timey family games as marbles, tops, jacks and more.
Also worth a stop is the park’s Exhibit Hall to view LBJ’s cowboy, saddle and boots, as well as other exhibits showcasing the Texas Hill Country’s German ancestry and ranching industry, and to gain insight into rural life in small Texas burgs such as Stonewall and Johnson City.
Park visitors also should be on the lookout for several new residents roaming state park meadows — longhorns from the State Longhorn Herd.
