This is the authors' summary from a 18-page report. For a copy of the complete report, use the download link in the sidebar.

Fish populations in Baylor Creek Reservoir were not surveyed in 2023-24 because lake access was not possible. This report summarizes the current condition of the reservoir and contains a management plan for the reservoir if water levels recover in the future.

Reservoir Description

Baylor Creek Reservoir is a 600-acre impoundment constructed in 1950 on Baylor Creek, a tributary of the Red River, located nine miles west of Childress, Texas. During the 2023 survey period the reservoir covered approximately 48 surface acres. The reservoir is owned by the City of Childress and is maintained for recreation. Water elevation is variable, and the reservoir has been prone to extreme low water. Shoreline access was poor and boat access was not feasible from any boat ramp or shoreline. The reservoir had high conductivity levels and has been subject to occasional Golden Algae kills.

Management History

Important sport fish include Largemouth Bass, White Crappie, and catfish.  The lake level increased in 2016 but lake levels have steadily declined since that time. Baylor Creek Reservoir is managed under statewide regulations.

Fish Community

Fish sampling was not possible during the last report cycle. The status of prey and sport fishes are unknown.

Management Strategies

Management actions have been suspended at Baylor Creek Reservoir due to low water levels and high conductivity. If water levels recover, exploratory surveys will be conducted, and a management plan will be developed.
