    • The Lost Pines Loop (Purple Trail) is closed from the 'Old Road Bed” east; this includes the north and south portions of the trail. You will still be able to use the Purple Trail from Park Road 1A to the Old Road Bed.

    Park HQ Closed; Advanced Reservations Required for Entry 

    Oct. 22, 2020 - The park is open but the headquarters is closed, out of an abundance of caution, due to an individual at the park testing positive for COVID-19. 

     Existing camping reservations will be honored and we will continue to allow visitors who  make reservations for day use entry before arriving at the park. No staff will be available to change/modify reservations, so all payments, transactions and reservations, need to be made online or by calling the customer service center, before you visit the park.

    A limited number of park staff and/or volunteers may be available at peak times to provide information, direct visitors, and conduct site checks.  Park phones will be monitored by an auto-attendant.  We hope to reopen the headquarters on October 30, 2020.

    Other Closures 

    These areas are closed due to flood damage:

    • The entire day use area, near the Lakeview camping loop, is closed until 2022 at the earliest. This closure includes the North Boat Ramp, beach swim area, area restrooms,  and the jetty portion of Loop J.
    • Various shoreline campsites
    • Pavilion
    • Some camping areas
    • J-loop day-use area (near Penn Farm)
    • The Marina is permanently closed and bait isn't for sale in the park.

    Entrance Road Damage

    Sept. 12, 2020 - All of Dolan Creek Rd. (the 19-mile rock/gravel roadway leading into the park from Hwy. 277) has experienced flooding, resulting in minor damages and washouts along the entire roadway.

    Although the roadway is currently passable, only high clearance and/or 4-wheel drive vehicles are recommended.

    Paddler Notice

    Beginning Oct. 18, 2020, the Devils Back paddler take-out will be closed due to road construction. The closure is scheduled to end sometime in late spring/summer of 2021. Permit itineraries that do not included Devils Back are not affected.

    Critical Water Shortage

    Due to ongoing drought, potable water is extremely limited. Restrooms may be closed, but portable toilets will be made available. While drinking water is available, please bring your own to help us conserve water during your next visit.

    Trail Closures

    Sept. 30, 2020 - A portion of the Loop Trail is closed due to damage from flooding. The trail has been rerouted onto the Turkey Pass Trail. Elevated trails, including the Summit Trail, will close during wet weather. Get trail status updates here, or on our Facebook page or Twitter feed.

      Aug. 29, 2020 - The Hercules Club Loop, park store, marina, pier, and the day-use area boat ramp, are closed. The only open boat ramp (screened shelter area) has restricted access.

      Only overnight campers can use the boat ramp on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. From Monday through Thursday, all visitors can use the boat ramp but parking is very limited.

      These temporary construction closures are due to repairs and improvements of the fishing pier and the boat ramp next to it.

      Newman's Bottom Parking

      Feb. 1, 2020 – Newman's Bottom parking area is now open. The road to the parking area has changed; the single-lane road narrows in places. Drive slowly and be courteous to other users. Trailers are NOT allowed at the Newman Parking area. Please park only in designated areas.

      Trailway Open to Horses

      July 14, 2020 – The Trailway is open to hikers, bikers and horseback riders.  Two miles of access are available from the Nails Creek Unit and 7 miles are available from the Birch Creek Unit.  The area around Flag Pond, CR 125, CR 140 and the Sandhill are also open to all users.  

      You must possess a current negative Coggins test for your horse. Equestrian parking for the Trailway is permitted at the access gate on CR 125 and CR 140.

      Invasive Ants

      Argentine ants, an invasive species, are in this park. While they can impact native wildlife and be a nuisance to park visitors, they do not bite or sting.

      TPWD is working to reduce the ants without harming natural resources. State Parks policy allows you to treat camping gear and equipment with over-the-counter chemicals, according to label. You cannot apply pesticides to park property. Before leaving, thoroughly inspect your vehicle, RV, camping gear, and other equipment, and notify staff if you find ants.

      Trail Hours and Closures

      Sept. 7, 2020 - 3.5 miles of trails are open for hiking but the following areas have modified hours or are closed:

      • The main gate near HQ is open from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
      • The gate at the south end of park is closed indefinitely.
      • HQ restrooms close at 4:30 p.m.
      • Campground restrooms will close for cleaning: See park for posted closure times.
      • Some areas of the park are closed due to past flood damage.
      • There is no fishing access in the park.
      • Visitor Center will be open from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. and closed from noon -1 p.m.

    Old Tunnel State Park Fredericksburg, TX

      Reservations Required for Entry After 5 p.m.

      For bat viewings, through Oct. 31, you must get permits in advance online or by calling the Customer Service Center, or you will no be allowed to be in the park after 5 p.m. 

      Currently no more than 10 people are allowed in each of our bat viewing areas, so make your reservations early.  

      From November through February, the park is closed to all entry after 5 p.m.

      Sept. 29, 2020 - We are open for day-use visitors, Wednesday through Sunday; camping is allowed every night.

      We are operating at limited capacities. All day-use and camping slots are usually filled in advance.  To guarantee entry to the park, please make a reservation online, or by calling the customer service center, before you visit.

      The following closures are in place:

      • The  Youth Group camping area is closed.
      • Park is closed to day-use only visitors on Monday and Tuesday
