Self-guided Ursids Meteor Shower

Be sure to take advantage of our dark park and watch for the Ursids Meteor Shower taking place December 17 - December 26 during this self-guided adventure.

The Ursids Meteor Shower peaks the night of December 22, 2024. However, the moon is bright that night making viewing difficult. The shower is from 17th - 26th, but some are still visible after those dates.

How to See the Ursids: You don't need any special equipment or a lot of skills to view a meteor shower. 
However, your eyes may take 15 to 20 minutes to get used to the dark.

Dress for the weather, and make sure you are comfortable, especially if you plan to stay out a long time. Bring a blanket or a comfortable chair with you—meteor watching can be a waiting game. 

Once you have found your viewing spot, lie back on the ground, or in the bed of a pickup and look up in the direction of the radiant. Use our Meteor Shower Sky Map.

Cost: Park programs are open to the public and free with a paid park entrance fee of $5 per person ages 13 and up; children 12 and under are always free! Park entry is free with the Texas State Park Pass. No need to register—just show up!
