First Day Hike - Upper Sunset & Tom Mays Trails
Thu, January 01, 2026
Let's start the New Year’s resolutions off on the right hiking foot!
This year we will be hiking the Upper Sunset and Tom Mays trails. This easy to moderate hike takes you along a low ridgeline west of the Tom Mays Park Access road. While there are sine short steep inclines and declines, you are rewarded with great views of the valley. The observant hiker will also spot a variety of fossils in our limestone, but remember to leave them where you find them for other visitors to enjoy. We will loop back to our starting point on the Tom Mays trail which goes parallel to the park's road.
Length: 3 miles round trip
Difficulty level: Moderate - difficult.
Bring: Water, snacks, sturdy hiking shoes/boots; optional: hiking stick, camera, binoculars, a map.
