Monarch Butterfly Tagging
Sat, October 11, 2025
Go beyond Big Tree with a ranger and Texas Master Naturalist as we search for Monarch butterflies!
Monarch butterflies typically migrate through Texas between the end of September into late October. In an effort to learn more about these threatened butterflies, we'll try to tag any we capture as part of the Monarch Watch efforts.
Where: Meet at the Big Tree parking lot promptly at 9am. We'll walk behind Big Tree together.
What to wear: We highly recommend a long-sleeved UV shirt and pants to help repel other bugs. Close-toed shoes only, NO SANDALS, FLIPFLOPS, OR CROCS.
Bring: sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen), hydration, and a chair if you'd like the option to sit.
Accessibility: This program takes place mostly on an uneven surface over sand and grass. Some areas are concrete. For questions on accessibility, email sara.rock@tpwd.texas.gov.
FYI:
- Children must be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the program.
- Program is free with park entrance ($5/person, children 12 & under are free) or Texas State Parks Annual Pass.
- Large groups please contact Sara Rock for a private event.
- Program may be canceled if no participants are present within 10 minutes of the start time, or in the case of inclement weather.
