Sink Your Shucks Community Oyster Reef Restoration Event (Registration is FULL)

Support local waterways and marine life by helping us restore oyster reefs!

Join HRI’s Sink Your Shucks program at Goose Island State Park to help rebuild an oyster reef in Aransas Bay! Volunteers will work stations to bag recycled oyster shell then place them into the bay. Participants of all ages are welcome, but shell can be heavy and we will be near open water so close parental guidance is required. Volunteers should wear closed-toe shoes (wading boots are perfect), clothes that can get wet and dirty, sunscreen, and a hat. Work gloves and shovels will be provided as well as drinks and snacks.
Registration is requested. You can sign up here. Volunteers will receive a free T-shirt for signing up, while supplies last.
Directions: When you arrive at the park, please stop by Headquarters to obtain your entrance permit (fees will be waived for any volunteer helping with the event). Visitors will be directed to the pier and be given parking information then. Two accessible parking spots will be available at the pier. The Sink Your Shucks program, founded in 2009, is the first in Texas to reclaim more than 1,000,000 pounds of shucked oyster shells from local restaurants and wholesalers and return them to our local waters, providing substrate to form new reefs and habitat for fish, crabs, and other organisms.
