Come and search for one of the rarest mushrooms in the world

Let’s look for the Texas Star Mushroom (Chorioactis geaster). at Inks Lake State Park. This rare mushroom is a true Lone Star State treasure, found in only a handful of places worldwide—Japan, Taiwan, and right here in Texas. Known for its dramatic “hissing” sound as it opens to release its spores, this fascinating fungi is as rare as it is mysterious.

Expect:

  • Easy-moderate hike with various terrains

  • Educational program with information about the Texas Star Mushroom, Inks Lake State Park, and Natural Resource Conservation principles 

  • 1.5-2 miles round-trip

  • Possible cancellations due to weather

What to bring:

  • Water

  • Camera if desired

  • Good hiking shoes

•This event is weather dependent. While it will continue even if raining, if there are storms or ice in the area it will be cancelled. 

Again, you must register all participants, anyone who has not been registered will not be able to participate. Each person must also have a day pass to enter the state park. 

IMPORTANT NOTE: Foraging, or the removal or destruction of plant life or other natural resources, is prohibited by State law and not allowed within a State Park or Natural Area.
