Participate in this year's City Nature Challenge at McKinney Falls State Park!

Join Austin Parks and Recreation Department, Texas Parks and Wildlife, Texas Master Naturalists, the Nature Conservancy, the Audubon Society, and many others in a fun challenge to see which city can document the most species during April 28 - May 1!

Join Ranger Lauren for a guided walk and nature journaling on Saturday 4/29! We will make plant and animal observations on iNaturalist and afterwards we will journal our sightings, all materials provided by the park. All ages welcome.

  • Meet: Upper Falls Restroom
  • Bring: Plenty of water, weather appropriate clothing, your phone with the iNaturalist app downloaded.

Can't make it to the event? Join on your own! Read below for more information.

Join Austin Parks and Recreation Department, Texas Parks and Wildlife, Texas Master Naturalists, the Nature Conservancy, the Audubon Society, and many others in a fun challenge to see which city can document the most species during April 28 - May 1!

It is easy to participate by joining an event or making observations on your own using the iNaturalist app. With the iNaturalist app, you just take a picture of a plant or animal, and the community will help identify which species it is. Any observation in the greater metropolitan area of Austin will count during the four day challenge. You can participate by exploring the life at McKinney Falls State Park, in your backyard, in your local park, or on a field trip with your local naturalist group. You can also help with IDs for other people's observations to increase our species count, come to a bioblitz, or even hold your own event!

Once again, this year you can participate in City Nature Challenge even if you don’t live in one of the metro areas. Visit City Nature Challenge 2023 Global Project. Simply click on the link, join the project and you are ready to join the fun.
