In observance of Juneteenth, reflect on the lives of enslaved individuals in Stephen F. Austin’s Colony and San Felipe de Austin and learn how their resilience and labor influenced the course of Texas history.

The San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site is honored to share a powerful and important chapter of its history. Through extensive research into historic documents, the site has identified the names of approximately 70 individuals who were enslaved and labored in this early Texas settlement. Among them, four individuals—Turner Morgan, Celia Allen, Mary Marks, and Joe Travis—left behind enough of a historical record to allow their personal stories to be told.

This event explores their lives and contributions to the development of San Felipe nearly 200 years ago, offering a deeper understanding of the enslaved people's roles and resilience in shaping Texas history. Join us as we honor their legacy and bring their voices into the historical narrative of this significant site.
