Equestrian

Horsing Around Permitted
  • While in designated campsites, horses should be kept haltered on a lead or in a pen area authorized by department personnel.
  • All horses must be certified to be free of Equine Infectious Anemia. Horse owners/riders must carry such certification (negative Coggins Test results) during their stay and present such documentation upon request.

The equestrian trail is open March 1-August 31. The trail winds through Maravillas Canyon and along the Rio Grande. No water facilities are available along the trail, so riders should either bring water for their animals or plan on watering them at the river. No public pens are available for livestock, so portable pens are recommended for overnight rides. Since Mexican livestock sometimes do cross the river, it is highly recommended that riding stock have current immunizations. Riders must show a negative Coggins' test for their animals upon entering the area or present proof upon request.
