General Access

The Area is situated along the Canadian River in the north east corner of the Texas panhandle. Designated public hunting roads enter the various sections allowing visitors to reach interior undisturbed environment.

Some areas on the GHWMA are inaccessible with two-wheel drive vehicles. Therefore, four-wheel drive vehicles are recommended to gain access to these areas. Due to high water levels during the winter, some of the bottomlands are not accessible even with a four-wheel drive.

Permits Required

The Annual Public Hunting (APH) Permit allows an adult access to WMA designated public hunting areas for dove and quail hunting without having to pay a daily entrance fee. An APH Permit is not needed for Special Permit hunts when drawings are conducted at Texas Parks and Wildlife Headquarters in Austin. All deer and turkey hunting is by Special Permit drawing. The Limited Public Use (LPU) Permit allows an adult to enter, camp, bird watch, hike, fish, horseback ride, etc. on the WMA but they may not hunt on the WMA or possess firearms or archery equipment.
