A Bridge to History

Cleburne State Park Opens Renovated CCC-Built Bridge

CLEBURNE, TX—Original members of the Civilian Conservation Corp were on hand to help cut the ribbon on Wednesday of the renovated Camp Creek Bridge, which was first built by CCC Company 3804 in 1936 inside Cleburne State Park.

Larkin Dilbeck of Arlington, TX (front left), a member of CCC Company 743, and Ernest Hubbard of Fort Worth (front middle), a junior officer of the CCC who served in Company 4447, 6443, 3440 and 4468, both hold oversized scissors to ceremoniously cut the ribbon on the renovated bridge that was recently completed at the park. Collis Park (front right), superintendent of Cleburne State Park, is also pictured here holding the ribbon.

The bridge, whose original construction cost for materials was listed at $300 when built more than 70 years ago, was restored to its original look and design and will serve primarily to provide pedestrian and bike access into the 500-acre state park located about 30 minutes southwest of the DFW Metroplex.

The current renovation project was funded using Texas Department of Transportation state highway funds and federal off-system bridge replacement funds from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).
