Anglers Urged to Report Fish Sightings via Tarpon Observation Network

AUSTIN, Texas — As we approach the peak of fishing season for one of the most sought-after saltwater species in Texas waters, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) is encouraging anglers to report when and where tarpon have been spotted or caught.

Galveston Bay Oyster Reef Restoration Gets Underway

HOUSTON — Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has begun construction on two oyster reef restoration projects in Galveston Bay funded by multi-million dollar federal grants to restore hurricane damage. One project is in East Galveston Bay, an area hit hard by Hurricane Ike. The other project is located along the north facing shoreline of Eagle Point near the community of San Leon.

Toyota Texas Bass Classic Comes to Lake Conroe Next Month

LAKE CONROE, Texas — The Toyota Texas Bass Classic, a Professional Anglers Association (PAA) sanctioned event, is only one month away from its debut on Lake Conroe. The October 16 — 18 competition benefits Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD) efforts to introduce young people and urban families to fishing and the outdoors.

Toyota ShareLunker Season Begins October 1

ATHENS, Texas — Texas Parks and Wildlife Department will begin accepting entries into the Toyota ShareLunker program October 1, 2009.

New Web site Showcases CCC’s Architectural Legacy in Texas state parks

AUSTIN, Texas — An ambitious new Web site called The Look of Nature: Designing Texas State Parks in the Great Depression explores the architectural heritage of the Civilian Conservation Corps still visible in state parks. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and Web design firm Terra Incognita created the site, funded in part by a National Endowment for the Arts grant.

City of San Antonio Transfers Almost 3,000 Acres to Government Canyon

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Government Canyon State Natural Area is adding almost 2,962 acres of environmentally critical habitat for conservation purposes and future recreational use. The additional land boosts the state natural area’s total size to 11,576 acres.

South Zone Dove Hunters Get Early Opener Sept. 18

AUSTIN, Texas — Dove hunters in the state’s southern region will be enjoying an opening weekend of wingshooting without the wait, thanks TPWD Program Staff requesting through the Central Flyway Council that adjustments in federal framework allowing Texas to open the South Zone this season on Friday, nearest September 20th but not earlier than the 17th.
