Neches – Davy Crockett Paddling Trail to Debut June 5

Lufkin — The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, The Conservation Fund, The Lufkin Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Lufkin/Angelina County Chamber of Commerce will join together on Saturday, June 5, to christen the state’s newest Texas Paddling Trail. The dedication event is scheduled for 1 p.m. at North Boggy Slough, located off Highway 7 west of Lufkin.  The dedication will coincide with the 13th annual Neches River Rendezvous.

Panhandle Rancher Jim Bill Anderson Receives 2010 Leopold Conservation Award for Texas

AUSTIN — A lifelong passion for preserving prairie land seeded by a high school summer job that didn’t turn out quite like he expected has earned Panhandle rancher Jim Bill Anderson the 2010 Leopold Conservation Award for Texas, a prestigious recognition conferred by Sand County Foundation and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department as part of its Lone Star Land Steward Awards program.

TPWD Extends Redfish Bay Seagrass Protection

AUSTIN — The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) extended indefinitely the protection of seagrass within the Redfish Bay State Scientific Area (RBSSA) by a vote taken during Thursday’s Commission meeting. This ruling removes the termination date of the state scientific area designation and thus extends the “no uprooting seagrass with a boat propeller” law in the area.

National Fishing Day June 5 at Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center

ATHENS, Texas — The Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center in Athens will kick off National Fishing and Boating Week by making a family fishing trip affordable with free admission for kids 12 and under plus free fishing for the whole family and free hot dogs and drinks from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Saturday, June 5.

Boaters and Anglers Urged to Help Curb Spread of Zebra Mussels from Lake Texoma

ATHENS—Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) and Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation (ODWC) officials are asking all users of Lake Texoma to assist in stopping the spread of invasive zebra mussels to other water bodies in Texas and Oklahoma.

TPWD Wildlife Biologist Leaves Legacy of Habitat Conservation

PALESTINE – Texas Parks and Wildlife Department wildlife biologist Wesley Brian Littrell, 32, of Athens, was killed last Friday afternoon in a tractor-related accident on the Gus Engeling Wildlife Management Area in northwest Anderson County. He leaves behind an unfinished legacy of habitat conservation.

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Hunter Education Instructors Needed

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) will be conducting a free Hunter Education New Instructor Training Workshop June 19, 2010, in Waco. Workshop will run from 8:00 a.m.  to 5:00 p.m. at the Bledsoe-Miller Community Center located at 300 MLK Blvd.

Life’s Better Outside® Experience Comes to AlleyFest June 5-6

LONGVIEW – For the first time, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is bringing its Life’s Better Outside® Experience to this year’s AlleyFest in Longview June 5-6. Visitors of all ages will be able to see and try various outdoor activities, including fishing, archery, and rock climbing.

Boating deaths decline in Texas, safety advocates want to keep it that way

AUSTIN — Deaths from boating accidents on Texas public waters decreased last year compared with the year before and Texas game wardens, boater education proponents and others hope to keep the numbers trending downward. The decrease in 2009 came after an unprecedented spike in boating accident deaths in 2008, the highest in more than ten years.
