AUSTIN — Spring has sprung. With extended sunshine and milder days, more people are enjoying the outdoors as native wildlife adds new fawns and hatchlings to their broods. Texans may start to notice more wildlife in their backyard, neighborhood or surrounding areas. The best thing to do is to leave them alone.

TFFC Hosts First Deaf Day and Picnic Event April 15

ATHENS — The Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center (TFFC) is pleased to announce a brand-new, daylong event on Saturday, April 15. The first-ever Deaf Day and Picnic at the TFFC will run during the center’s regular hours (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) with a variety of family-friendly activities. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own picnic, try their hand at fishing with loaner gear provided by TFFC and enjoy a fun spring day.

Celebrating 100 Years of Texas State Parks with Special April Events

AUSTIN — The Centennial Celebration of Texas State Parks is in full swing as spring brings more Texans outdoors. To commemorate 100 years, every state park will host at least one special community event during the 2023 Centennial year, along with regular park events all year long. In April, state parks across Texas will host a variety of events, including several that commemorate Earth Day. Everyone is invited to join in the fun.

April is Texas State Parks Month at Whole Earth Provision Co.

AUSTIN — For the 12th year, Whole Earth Provision Co. will celebrate “April is Texas State Parks Month” by hosting a fund drive supporting Texas State Parks. The Texas-based travel, adventure and nature store will give all funds gathered at its six Texas store locations to help finance day-to-day operational expenses, including enhanced visitor programs, park trail maps and facilities maintenance.

Boaters, Anglers Encouraged to Stay Clear of Coastal Waterbird Rookeries

AUSTIN — With peak boating season around the corner, Texans recreating on the coast are likely to spot iconic coastal birds such as brown pelicans, roseate spoonbills, black skimmers and reddish egrets nesting in dense colonies, called rookeries. These rookeries provide breeding homes (and nurseries) for thousands of birds and other species on barrier and smaller islands in Texas bays. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) encourages Texas boaters and anglers to watch out for these nesting birds while on the coast so they aren’t disturbed during this sensitive time.

O.H. Ivie Churns Out 15th Legacy Class Lunker

ATHENS – O.H. Ivie Lake’s historic run of Legacy Class Lunkers charged forward on Saturday with another massive largemouth bass. Kevin Winchester of Ballinger reeled in 13.08-pound ShareLunker 650, giving the lake its 15th Legacy Class fish of the 2023 Toyota ShareLunker collection season. Winchester’s catch was also the 18th overall Legacy Lunker that anglers across the nation have landed in Texas this season.
