Lake Corpus Christi State Park to Host 31st Annual Kid Fish Event

MATHIS –Park rangers at Lake Corpus Christi State Park are hosting the 31st annual Kid Fish 2023 on Jan. 28 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Young anglers can learn how to fish, enjoy the wonders of outdoor recreation and be a part of the Texas State Parks 100 Years Celebration.

TPWD Unveils Virtual Reality Boater App at Houston Boat and Car Show

HOUSTON – The latest classroom for boating education is virtual reality. In a nationwide first, the TPWD boater education program will utilize VR headsets to introduce audiences to the joy of sailing where wind, waves and actions all impact the boat’s behavior. While immersed in a highly realistic environment, participants will learn about different types of sailboats, parts of the boat and steering basics. The virtual reality sailing course is part of the MarineVerse app, one of the online training courses offered by Nautic Ed.

AUSTIN – The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) is celebrating 50 years of hunter education in Texas and officially recognized Austin Zurek of Midlothian as the 1.5 millionth student during Thursday’s Texas Parks and Wildlife (TPW) Commission meeting.

“Veterans Day at the TFFC” Slated for Nov. 12

ATHENS – The Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center (TFFC) is excited to announce the second annual “Veterans Day at the TFFC” event to honor and support veterans. The event is scheduled for Nov. 12 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. with free admission for veterans and their families.

“Ethelsgiving” Headed to the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center in November

ATHENS – The Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center (TFFC) is teaming up with the Henderson County Food Pantry this November for the “Ethelsgiving Feed the Hungry, Feed the Fish” food drive. The annual tradition began in 2020 to honor the first ShareLunker “Ethel,” which weighed 17.67-pounds and was caught Nov. 26, 1986. This year’s drive begins on Nov. 1 and runs throughout the month at the Athens facility.

Habitat Conditions Could Present Challenges for Waterfowl Hunters this Season

AUSTIN – Dry conditions across the state could pose some challenges as waterfowl hunters gear up for the start of the new season. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) biologists indicate habitat conditions are not ideal for ducks and duck hunters in many parts of Texas. However, weather pattern changes in addition to timely cold fronts and significant rain events could help improve hunter’s fortunes.

Halloween at the Hatchery Set for Oct. 27 at TFFC

ATHENS – Families are in for a treat Thursday, Oct. 27 at the annual “Halloween at the Hatchery” event hosted by the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center (TFFC). The annual event provides a safe place to go trick-or-treating while raising money for three local beneficiaries, The Rainbow Room, East Texas Crisis Center and the Athens High School Fishing Team.

Texas State Parks Invites Texans to Join in Celebrating 100 Years of State Parks in 2023

AUSTIN— The Centennial Celebration of Texas State Parks is right around the corner, and park lovers are invited to get outside and join celebrations across the state. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) in partnership with Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation (TPWF) will celebrate 100 years of Texas State Parks beginning January 2023.

ATHENS – The Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center (TFFC) is excited to announce it is accepting entries for the 2023 Texas division of Wildlife Forever’s Fish Art Contest through Feb. 28. The Fish Art Contest is part of an international conservation education program designed to foster youth interest in fisheries and fishing.
