TPWD Sets Public Meetings to Gather Input on Oyster Reef Closures

AUSTIN- The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) is seeking public input on proposed regulation changes to prohibit the harvest of oysters permanently and temporarily within certain reef areas. These proposals include the permanent prohibition of oyster harvest in Carlos Bay, Mesquite Bay and Ayres Bay (Mesquite Bay complex) and the temporary prohibition of oyster harvest between one and two years for new reefs recently constructed in TX-24 in San Antonio Bay, TX-6 in Galveston Bay and TX-4 in Galveston Bay.

AUSTIN — Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) está recabando comentarios públicos sobre los cambios de regulación propuestos para prohibir la recolección de ostras de forma permanente y temporal dentro de ciertas áreas de arrecifes. Estas propuestas incluyen la prohibición permanente de recolección de ostras en Carlos Bay, Mesquite Bay y Ayres Bay (complejo Mesquite Bay) y la prohibición temporal de la recolección de ostras de entre uno y dos años para arrecifes nuevos recientemente construidos en TX-24 en San Antonio Bay, TX-6 en Galvestone Bay y TX-4 en Galveston Bay.

TPWD Recommends Necessary Precautions to Reduce Spread of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza

AUSTIN – Recently, the National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL) confirmed the presence of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in a backyard poultry flock in Dallas County. As expected by disease experts, HPAI is again circulating amongst wild birds in Texas as fall migration has begun for waterbirds and waterfowl. Earlier this year, HPAI was discovered in a bald eagle and a horned owl in Texas.

Texas’ Seventh Annual Pollinator BioBlitz is the Bee’s Knees!

AUSTIN — For the next two weeks Texans can take part in the seventh annual Texas Pollinator BioBlitz. In support of the event, organizations and sites around the state will be hosting a variety of events to get people outdoors to observe pollinators of all types in yards, natural areas, gardens, parks and community centers. Of course, you don’t have to visit a particular site to participate; your very own yard or green space will do.

David Yoskowitz Named TPWD Executive Director

AUSTIN, Texas – David Yoskowitz, Ph.D. was named executive director of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department today at a special meeting of the TPW Commission in Austin, Texas. Yoskowitz is currently the senior executive director and Endowed Chair for Socioeconomics at the Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.

2023 Texas State-Fish Art Contest Now Open for Entries

ATHENS – The Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center (TFFC) is excited to announce it is accepting entries for the 2023 Texas division of Wildlife Forever’s Fish Art Contest through Feb. 28. The Fish Art Contest is part of an international conservation education program designed to foster youth interest in fisheries and fishing.
