TPWD Dedicates Justin Hurst WMA in Honor of Fallen Warden

FREEPORT, Texas — The site formerly known as Peach Point Wildlife Management area near here is being formally rededicated as the “Justin Hurst WMA” in recognition of the game warden and former wildlife biologist who was killed in the line of duty earlier this year. The renaming of the site was made official during a special ceremony Oct. 12.

San Jacinto River Dioxin Site Proposed for Federal Cleanup

HOUSTON, Texas — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has proposed listing an abandoned toxic waste site in the San Jacinto River for the federal National Priorities List (NPL). If approved for inclusion on the NPL the site will be eligible for cleanup in the federal Superfund program.

Weatherby Award Acknowledges Texas Spurs Nationwide Wildlife Expos

AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas Parks and Wildlife Expo has become a national model for educational efforts to promote wildlife conservation and outdoor recreation, a role which will be recognized at the expo volunteer barbeque on Saturday evening, Oct. 6 by board members from Weatherby Foundation International (WFI).

TPW Commission Approves Lake Sam Rayburn Boating Access Grant

AUSTIN, Texas — Due to funding constraints, only one boat ramp project received a 75 percent matching grant of $500,000 from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in the latest round of grants. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission approved the project at its Aug. 23 meeting.

Opening Day Shrimp Boat Count Lowest On Record

AUSTIN, Texas — Aerial counts of bay and bait shrimp boats working the Texas coast were conducted Aug. 15 after the commercial shrimp season opened. There was good weather for the count, although the coast was bracing for Tropical Storm Erin, which made landfall the next day.
