Go Fish! Summer Events Held Across Texas

Get your kids hooked on the outdoors this summer with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s Go Fish! summer event series. Free fishing lessons for the young and young at heart will be hosted around the state at selected state parks throughout May, June and July.

Biologists Complete First Guadalupe Bass Stocking on South Llano River

AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Parks and Wildlife Department inland fisheries biologists today completed the first stocking of Guadalupe bass in the South Llano River. The release of fish here marks a new chapter in a decades-long effort to save the state fish of Texas. It’s also the first, prototype effort of a new watershed scale approach to water resource conservation in Texas.

Lake Fairfield Tilapia Fishery Flourishing

ATHENS—An old saying—“It’s an ill wind that blows no one good”—points out that there are two sides to almost everything. Bow fishers are finding that despite an extensive fish kill at Lake Fairfield in August, 2010, that devastated the largemouth bass, catfish and red drum fisheries, there are still recreational angling opportunities to be had.

TPWD to Report on Status of Lake Amon G. Carter May 19

ATHENS—Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) Inland Fisheries biologists will host a meeting at 7:00 p.m. May 19 in the Legends Building of the Bowie Community Center to report on the status of the fishery in Lake Amon G. Carter.

Gulf Shrimp Season Closing May 15

AUSTIN — The Gulf of Mexico commercial shrimp season for both state and federal waters will close 30 minutes after sunset on Sunday, May 15 until an unspecified time in July.

Texas Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame to Induct Long-Time TPWD Employee

ATHENS—David L. Campbell, a 45-year employee of Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s Inland Fisheries Division, will be inducted into the Texas Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame at a banquet June 4 in Athens.

ATHENS—Las Huellas Fishing Kids and the City of Brownsville will attempt to set a record for the world’s biggest fishing tournament on Saturday, May 21.

Texas State-Fish Art Contest Winners Announced

ATHENS—Officials at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center have announced the winners of the Texas division of the Wildlife Forever State-Fish Art Contest.

Toyota ShareLunker Program Winds Up Season 25

ATHENS—The Toyota ShareLunker season just concluded marked the 25th anniversary of the ShareLunker program. During that time 523 fish have been entered. The current season’s 19 entries was about two fish short of the long-term average.
