Trout Season Opens This Weekend at Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center

ATHENS, Texas — Rainbow trout fishing comes to the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center in Athens each December, once water temperatures cool enough for the cold-water fish to survive.

Rainbows Coming to Tyler

TYLER — The East Texas Woods and Waters Foundation (ETWWF) and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) will host two special fishing events in January 2010. Two thousand rainbow trout will be stocked into The Nature Center pond to provide a free fishing opportunity for area youth and their adult fishing mentors. Event dates are January 2 and 9, 2010, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., rain or shine.

ATHENS, Texas — The latest Toyota ShareLunker had a short ride to its new quarters at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center: It was caught from a private lake in Anderson County only a few miles away.

Game Warden Sgt. Chris Davis Named Shikar-Safari Officer Of The Year

AUSTIN, Texas — Chris Davis of Austin has received the prestigious Shikar-Safari Club International’s Wildlife Officer of the Year Award, awarded annually by the worldwide conservation organization to one wildlife law enforcement officer in each state. Davis, a Texas Parks and Wildlife Department special operations sergeant is the 30th Texan to receive the award.

$1.5 million Federal Grant to Expand Texas Artificial Reef Program

AUSTIN, Texas — The sand-bottom Gulf of Mexico provides almost no natural reefs for marine life, which is why the Texas Artificial Reef Program was created to provide structures for a thriving ocean ecosystem of aquatic invertebrates and the fish that feed on them. A $1.5 million federal grant will fund creation or enhancement of seven reef sites off the Texas coast in coming years.
