TPW Commission Approves Lake Sam Rayburn Boating Access Grant

AUSTIN, Texas — Due to funding constraints, only one boat ramp project received a 75 percent matching grant of $500,000 from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in the latest round of grants. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission approved the project at its Aug. 23 meeting.

Opening Day Shrimp Boat Count Lowest On Record

AUSTIN, Texas — Aerial counts of bay and bait shrimp boats working the Texas coast were conducted Aug. 15 after the commercial shrimp season opened. There was good weather for the count, although the coast was bracing for Tropical Storm Erin, which made landfall the next day.

TPWD Expands Spanish-Language Web Services

AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas Parks & Wildlife Department has taken another step to spread the word that “Life’s Better Outside.” On July 25, the award-winning Texas Parks & Wildlife television show began streaming through MyOutdoorTV.com, the world's largest internet video network for outdoor television shows, radio, video, and conservation information.

Hunting, Fishing Licenses Go On Sale Aug. 15

AUSTIN, Texas — New hunting and fishing licenses for 2007-08 will be available beginning Wednesday, Aug. 15, and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is encouraging hunters to buy early and avoid the rush heading into the Sept. 1 dove season opener.

Texas Youth Takes Top Honors in National Fish Art Contest

ATHENS, Texas—Clayton Bowen of Eagle Lake won the Art of Conservation Award in Wildlife Forever’s 2007 State-Fish Art Contest, it was announced Saturday at the Mall of America in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Bowen’s watercolor on canvas paper of a Guadalupe bass diving into the water will be reproduced as a stamp for sale to collectors; proceeds will be used to fund conservation education and aquatic restoration projects across America.

Gulf of Mexico Shrimp Season Opens July 15

AUSTIN — The Gulf of Mexico commercial shrimp season for both state and federal waters will open 30 minutes after sunset on Sunday, July 15, 2007. This opening date is based on an evaluation of the biological, social and economic information to maximize the benefits to the industry and the public.
