AUSTIN – The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission approved changes to the regulations on passive fishing gear (jug lines, minnow traps, perch traps, throwlines, and trotlines) to facilitate the removal of abandoned gear from public waters, make the presence of passive fishing gear identifiable to all users of public waters, and minimize the unintended take of aquatic resources.
TEXAS- The Texas commercial and recreational oyster season opens Nov. 1, 2019 and closes April 30, 2020. However, six areas will remain closed despite the opening of the season.

ATHENS – East Texas families can get more treats than tricks at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center’s Halloween at the Hatchery event. The annual event provides a safe place to go trick-or-treating while raising money for local causes including the East Texas Crisis Center, Henderson County Rainbow Room, and the Athens High School Bass Fishing Team.
ABILENE – Catfish stockings scheduled for this fall to support the Neighborhood Fishin’ Program in the Abilene-area are being moved to Cal Young Park Lake from Grover Nelson Small Pond for the rest of the 2019 stocking season. At the conclusion of the program’s catfish stocking season, which is Nov. 1, the Neighborhood Fishin’ Program will be ending in Abilene. These changes are being made because of ongoing water quality and depredation issues at Grover Nelson Small Pond and the decision to end the program was a mutual decision between the city and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
AUSTIN – The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) is seeking public comment on proposed changes to the regulations on passive fishing gear (jug lines, minnow traps, perch traps, throwlines, and trotlines), which includes adding requirements and specifications for floats and reducing the valid period for gear tags to reduce the negative impacts of abandoned passive fishing gear in Texas public waters.

AUSTIN – This Saturday, Sept. 28 is National Hunting and Fishing Day, and supporters of the special day are calling on Texas hunters and anglers to invite someone to go hunting or fishing, whether a first-timer, child or grandchild, friend, co-worker or neighbor.
ATHENS – The Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center (TFFC) is offering visitors opportunities to learn about a wide range of outdoor skills and participate in family fun events during its annual Outdoor Expo and Bluegill Family Fishing Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 21. The expo will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
