TPWD Biologist Receives 2017 Ken Cook Friend of B.A.S.S. Fisheries Award

AUSTIN – Texas Parks and Wildlife Department inland fisheries biologist and avid bass angler Todd Driscoll of Jasper received the Ken Cook Friend of B.A.S.S Fisheries Award March 24 at the Bassmaster Classic in Houston. Driscoll is known among his peers and constituents for his work studying bass tournament fish care and mortality, improving fish habitat in some of the state’s top fisheries, dedicating much of his personal time to bass fishing, and passionately working with anglers to make fishing better in Texas.

Bobby Whiteside, Gulf States Toyota Named 2017 TFF Hall of Fame Inductees

ATHENS – The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department announced Bobby Whiteside, a professor, author and avid bass angler; and Gulf States Toyota, a longtime sponsor of Texas Parks and Wildlife Inland Fisheries programs; have been selected as 2017 inductees into the Texas Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame.

Toyota ShareLunker Selective Breeding Program Connects Bass Anglers across the State

ATHENS – In March 2008, Jeremy Bruton of Blooming Grove caught a 13.05 pound largemouth bass during a fishing tournament on Richland Chambers Reservoir. The big bass propelled Bruton to a second place finish and a $40 payout in the tournament that day, but the fish proved to be of much greater value when its 13.06 pound daughter was caught nine years later and more than 100 miles away Feb. 28 on Lake Naconiche.

First Toyota ShareLunker Caught From Lake Naconiche

ATHENS – Angler Larry Mosby caught the second Toyota ShareLunker of the 2017 season Feb. 28 from Lake Naconiche near Nacogdoches. ShareLunker 567, a 13.06 pound largemouth bass, is the first ShareLunker from the lake to be submitted to the program.

Free Fishing for Spring Breakers at the Tyler Nature Center

TYLER – Warm weather is great for spring breakers looking to get outside after a winter hibernating indoors, but its bad news for winter-loving rainbow trout who thrive in the colder water. Tyler area spring breakers can take advantage of the changing fishing seasons and catch the rest of these winter-fish for free March 13 to 16 at the Tyler Nature Center.

Three Leased Public Fishing Access Areas Open for White Bass Anglers

AUSTIN – White bass are one of Texas’ most sought after game fish, especially when they make their annual spring spawning migration into rivers above reservoirs. Now that those fish are on the move, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) River Access and Conservation Area program has opened free public access sites for anglers at three of the best white bass runs in the state.

Biologists Confirm Genetics of First ShareLunker Offspring Entered into Program

ATHENS – In March 2006, angler Edward Reid pulled a staggering 14.48-pound largemouth bass from the depths of Lake Conroe near Houston. On Feb. 10, nearly 11 years later and more than 234 miles away, angler Ryder Wicker caught the 13.07-pound offspring of that fish from Marine Creek Lake near Fort Worth.
