Powderhorn Ranch Becomes Texas’ Newest Wildlife Management Area

AUSTIN – Over 15,000 acres of the Powderhorn Ranch along the Texas coast in Calhoun County, prime unspoiled coastal prairie, is now a state wildlife management area. The newest crown jewel in the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) system is the result of a unique conservation land acquisition coalition led by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation (TPWF).

Blanco River Named 2018 “Water to Watch” by National Fish Habitat Partnership

AUSTIN – The Blanco River is one of the primary river networks that Central Texas communities depend upon for drinking water, flood abatement, agricultural production and recreation. Thanks to collaborative conservation work conducted by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD), landowners and other local partners, the Blanco River was named one of 20 “Waters to Watch” by the National Fish Habitat Partnership in 2018.

It’s Time for Texas’ Third Annual Pollinator BioBlitz

AUSTIN — In support of Texas’ third statewide Pollinator BioBlitz, organizations and sites around the state will be hosting a variety of events to get people outdoors to observe pollinators of all types in yards, natural areas, gardens, parks and community centers. AUSTIN — The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) is building its next generation of elite state law enforcement officers with the 63rd Texas Game Warden and State Park Police Cadet class. Applications are being accepted Oct. 1-Nov. 16.

Inks Lake State Park Hosts Hill Country Heritage Expo Oct. 5-6

BURNET— Enjoy two days of cultural exhibits, weapons demonstrations and Native American dances at the Hill Country Heritage Expo hosted by Inks Lake State Park. The event is free to the public with park entry fees and runs Oct. 5-6.

Wyler Aerial Tramway Closed to the Public

Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center Announces Tuesday Closures through February 2019

ATHENS – Beginning Oct. 2, the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center (TFFC) will begin a winter schedule that includes the closure of one additional weekday. TFFC will be closed to the public on Tuesdays from October 2018 through the end of February 2019.

Repairs to Begin at Historic Balmorhea State Park Pool

BALMORHEA— After months of thorough evaluations, repair to the historic Balmorhea State Park pool is set to begin. The labor-intensive job will repair the damage to the concrete apron used to stabilize the diving board along the east headwall after part of the structure collapsed during the pool’s annual cleaning in early May. Further geotechnical examination concluded that the structure failure was due to years of undermining erosion behind the wall caused by the flow of water from the springs.
