AUSTIN – As autumn arrives and leaves begin to turn, the colorful and unique story of Texas – from its prehistoric times through, Spanish colonialism, the republic’s fight for independence from Mexico, post-Civil War era and into the 20th century – unfolds through guided tours and special events at more than 50 historic sites within the state parks system. And, there’s no better time to experience that history than October.
ATHENS—A record 59 teams entered the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center’s annual Bluegill Family Fishing Tournament September 28, and 26 teams went away with prizes. Every team received a goodie bag.
AUSTIN — A the coalition of three state agencies has extended through October their “What does your Texas drought look like?” statewide photo project, which has already has received hundreds of compelling photographs documenting the devastation caused by the ongoing drought. And the coalition is now asking Texans to share photos showing the other side of the drought, by documenting innovative water conservation methods and positive drought responses.
ATHENS—Halloween at the Hatchery takes place at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center (TFFC) October 24, and local businesses and organizations are invited to take part.
WICHITA FALLS – Seventy-four years after he was laid to rest in a crudely marked grave in Riverside Cemetery, a slave-turned-vaunted-Indian fighter who made his home in Wichita Falls will finally receive official state and military recognition on Saturday, Oct. 5.
ATHENS—The Toyota Texas Bass Classic (TTBC), the world championship of professional bass fishing, is bringing the best anglers along with some of the biggest bands in country music to Conroe. Today, tournament officials announced a full lineup of free, family-friendly activities taking place at the Lone Star Convention & Expo Center Oct. 4-6 to coincide with the tournament.
HOUSTON — The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, in cooperation with the San Jacinto Battleground Conservancy and Native American Seed, Inc., and with the generous support of Shell Oil Company, is restoring 110 acres of tall-grass prairie at San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site.

AUSTIN— The 83rd Legislature has restored approximately half of the Texas Recreation Parks Account (TRPA) and Large County & Municipality Recreation and Parks Account funding for the 2014-2015 biennium.
