BASTROP — Tomorrow, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department will hold a meeting to hear public comments on the development of the golf course area at Bastrop State Park. The golf course, which closed in 2015, will be repurposed for conservation and recreational uses.
AUSTIN— Heat exhaustion is one of the most common maladies that park rangers encounter during the summer months, and with temperatures soaring to scorching heats well above 90 degrees, Texas State Park staff are encouraging park visitors to follow basic heat safety precautions to stay safe on the trail.
BURNET- The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) will present plans and proposals for development of facilities and recreational use areas at the Inks Lake State Park complex during a public meeting July 13. The public is invited to attend and provide comment on the plans, which will affect Inks Lake State Park, nearby Longhorn Cavern State Park, and the road between the two, historic Park Road 4.
WASHINGTON— Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site will be hosting a free Juneteenth Heritage Celebration 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday to showcase the rich African-American heritage and culture of the Brazos Valley, past and present.
LA PORTE— The Battleship Texas State Historic Site is reopening to visitors Saturday after a weeklong closure to repair leaks in its hull. The 103-year-old battleship is a veteran of both World Wars, including two of World War II’s most infamous battles- Iwo Jima and D-Day.
MONAHANS— Monahans Sandhills State Park is celebrating its 60th anniversary this Saturday with a day filled with fun events in the dunes. The free event begins at 9 a.m. and continues on until 10 p.m.
EL PASO— Last March, a survey for additional Native American rock paintings, also known as pictographs, began at Hueco Tanks State Park and Historic Site. One year later, previously unknown pictographs in 29 locations at the site have been discovered using D-Stretch image enhancement technology.
BALMORHEA— Starting Memorial Day weekend, Balmorhea State Park will be limiting its day-use visitation to 1,300 park goers per day. This change is a new effort at Balmorhea to preserve the delicate resources at the park-including some threatened and endangered species- as well as the quality of experience park visitors expect to have.
AUSTIN— With their popularity soaring, visitation at Texas State Parks has increased by more than half a million visits in the past four years, making entrance into the system’s more popular sites difficult. Instead of waiting in line to enter a park, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) staff are recommending visitors explore some of the area’s lesser known sites that offer park goers less crowds and unique experiences for their family adventures.
WICHITA FALLS – Biologists from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Inland Fisheries office in Wichita Falls recently completed fall electrofishing and spring gillnet surveys on Possum Kingdom Reservoir, finding striped bass populations to be at their highest in 14 years.
