AUSTIN— February offers an ideal time to pack up your bike and explore hundreds of miles of trails that wind through Texas State Parks. The parks’ safe and scenic environments offer both easy and challenging rides hugging lake shores, beneath towering pines, through rolling hills and along mountain trails open to exploration any day of the week.
LAPORTE – Volunteers from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Shell Oil Co. and Apache Corporation on Feb. 6 will be planting almost 300 trees at San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site as part of an ongoing prairie restoration project.
AUSTIN – The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department exhibit, “The Last of the Dreadnought Battleships,” will open on Feb. 1 at the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum and run through April 13. The exhibit pays homage to the Battleship TEXAS, which was commissioned 100 years ago.
AUSTIN – Vow to battle the post-holiday letdown and shed those unwanted pounds by pounding a Texas State Park trail, beginning Jan. 1, at more than 60 organized First Day Hikes that will kick off the New Year as part of a growing nationwide tradition. Remember, too, that most Texas state parks host hiking events of various lengths and degrees of difficulty throughout the year.

FORT DAVIS – Davis Mountains State Park will reopen for all activities on Friday, Dec. 20, well ahead of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s original projected opening date.
AUSTIN— Spend a weekend at one of the 70 state parks that offer group facilities and create a new holiday tradition in the great outdoors. Serve turkey and all the trimmings in a park recreation hall equipped with a full kitchen or gather near a roaring fireplace in an open-air pavilion to sing carols and rejoice in the season.
ATHENS—Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) Inland Fisheries and State Parks divisions have partnered with other private groups to develop habitat enhancement projects to improve fishing opportunities at Inks Lake the past three years. Selected sites have been refurbished with brush, gravel and light structures designed to attract fish to areas accessible by boat and bank anglers.
WASHINGTON, Texas — The historic Christmas traditions of Texas in the 1860s will transport visitors to a much simpler time at a day-long Christmas on the Brazos celebration at Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 14.
