MONAHANS— Monahans Sandhills State Park is celebrating its 60th anniversary this Saturday with a day filled with fun events in the dunes. The free event begins at 9 a.m. and continues on until 10 p.m.
LUBBOCK—A new multi-partner playa restoration program, the Texas Playa Conservation Initiative, is offering participating landowners free backfilling of pits and trenches in playas surrounded by grass.
EL PASO— Last March, a survey for additional Native American rock paintings, also known as pictographs, began at Hueco Tanks State Park and Historic Site. One year later, previously unknown pictographs in 29 locations at the site have been discovered using D-Stretch image enhancement technology.
QUITAQUE— Strap on some boots and head to the panhandle for the seventh annual Texas State Bison Music Festival benefiting the Texas State Bison Herd at Caprock Canyons State Park. Advance tickets are on sale this week for the festival, held 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 23 on Main Street in Quitaque.

ATHENS— The Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center, headquarters for the Texas Division of the Wildlife Forever State-Fish Art Contest, announced the top 12 state winners May 31.
AUSTIN – The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission has approved amendments to chronic wasting disease (CWD) management response rules based in part on discovery of the disease in a free-ranging white-tailed deer west of San Antonio. The changes address containment and surveillance measures, and permitted movement of live deer, in portions of Bandera, Medina, and Uvalde counties as well as zone delineations in the northwest Panhandle.
AUSTIN— The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission today approved $3.46 million dollars in grants to help enhance 22 motorized and non-motorized recreational trail-related projects across the state.
