Frequently Asked Questions
Private Fishing PondsI've seen large wading birds in or near my pond, and suspect they're eating my fish. Can I shoot these birds?
Great egrets, snowy egrets, great blue herons, and other migratory birds are protected under federal law. It’s illegal to shoot, trap, or harm them in any way. However, there are steps you can take to protect the fish in your pond:
- Wading birds fish in shallow water. If it’s more than four feet deep, they’ll look elsewhere. If possible, design your pond or modify it to create steep slopes, minimizing shallow areas near the shore.
- Any remaining shallows can be covered with netting to keep birds away.
- Remove any snags or tree limbs where herons can sit and look for fish. You don’t want a perch that’s a foot or less above the pond’s surface.
