Action
Land Acquisition Strategy – Bastrop County
Approximately 150 Acres at Bastrop State Park
March 25, 2021

I.      Executive Summary:  The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) staff recommends the purchase of several tracts of land totaling approximately 150 acres adjacent to Bastrop State Park (SP).

II.     Discussion:  Bastrop SP consists of approximately 7,200 acres in central Bastrop County and protects a significant example of the Lost Pines ecosystem of Texas. It is located 32 miles southeast of Austin. The state acquired the core of the SP in 1933 to1935 by deeds from private owners and the City of Bastrop. The Civilian Conservation Corps constructed the earliest park facilities in the 1930s. Bastrop SP is an extremely popular Central Texas destination for hiking, birding, and camping.

The TPWD staff has an interest in negotiating the acquisition of several tracts of land from willing sellers totaling approximately 150 acres, contingent upon authorization from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission.  These strategic acquisitions are all located adjacent to the SP and have been identified as top priorities by the park staff and management.  Acquisition of these tracts would allow future public use, protection of critical habitat, added recreational opportunities, and expansion and restoration of the Lost Pines.

III.     Recommendation:  The staff recommends the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission adopt the following motion:

“The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission authorizes the Executive Director to take all necessary steps to acquire several strategic tracts of land totaling approximately 150 acres in Bastrop County for addition to Bastrop State Park.”
