Commission Agenda Item No. 10 Presenter: Trey Vick
Action Disposition of Land – San Patricio County Approximately 8.1 Acres at Lake Corpus Christi State Park January 22, 2026
I. Executive Summary: The City of Corpus Christi requests a disposition of land at Lake Corpus Christi State Park to allow the City of Mathis to install and maintain water wells to meet urgent public water needs.
II. Discussion: The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) operates Lake Corpus Christi State Park in San Patricio County on land leased from the City of Corpus Christi, with a current lease term through 2052. The park provides access to the 18,256-acre Lake Corpus Christi and various recreational opportunities, such as paddling, fishing, birding, and camping.
The City of Corpus Christi approached staff requesting the release of 8.1 acres from the lease, to allow the City of Corpus Christi to lease that area to the City of Mathis for the installation and maintenance of water wells adjacent to an existing City of Mathis water treatment plant. The 8.1 acres is composed of two tracts. One tract is approximately 5.5 acres, and the second tract is approximately 2.6 acres. The subject tracts of land do not currently provide recreational opportunities to the public, and disposition of the tracts will not hinder current park operations.
III. Recommendation: Staff recommends that the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission adopt the following motion:
“The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission adopts the Resolution attached as Exhibit A and authorizes the Executive Director to take all necessary steps to dispose of two tracts totaling approximately 8.1 acres at Lake Corpus Christi State Park.”

A Resolution by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission Regarding the Disposition of Land Approximately 8.1 Acres of Real Property in San Patricio County
Resolution
Whereas, the City of Corpus Christi leases Lake Corpus Christi State Park in San Patricio County to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD); and,
Whereas, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department leases and operates Lake Corpus Christi State Park for a variety of recreation, historic, and conservation values; and,
Whereas, TPWD was approached by the City of Corpus Christi to release 8.1 acres from the lease so that the City of Corpus Christi can then lease this area to the City of Mathis for the installation and maintenance of water wells adjacent to an existing water treatment plant; and,
Whereas, TPWD staff find the tracts serve no recreational, historic, or conservation value to the agency; and,
Whereas, TPWD staff find the disposition of these tracts will not affect park operations; and,
Whereas, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission (Commission) finds that as required by Texas Parks and Wildlife Code (PWC) chapter 26, notices of today’s hearing of this matter were published at least once a week for three consecutive weeks in a newspaper of general circulation that is published at least six days a week in the communities nearest to Lake Corpus Christi State Park in which such newspapers are published (Corpus Christi Caller Times), with the last day of publication being not less than one week or more than two weeks before the date of today’s hearing; and,
Whereas, the Commission finds, in accordance with PWC chapter 26, that (1) there is no feasible and prudent alternative to the use of the land; and (2) the program or project that requires the land includes all reasonable planning to minimize harm to the land; and
Whereas, the Commission finds, in accordance with PWC section 13.009, that ownership of the real property interest in these tracts is no longer in the best interest of TPWD; and,
Now, therefore, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission authorizes the TPWD Executive Director to take all necessary steps to dispose of the subject 8.1 acres of land subject to the purposes and subject to the conditions described herein and in the motion approving this Resolution.
Adopted and approved this 22nd day of January, 2026.
