"X" Marks the Geocache

1:00p to 2:00p
Sat, March 07, 2026
Hannah Pickens
(830) 307-0059

Take a step back in technological time and learn the basics of land navigation using a map, find park geocaches on paper, and graduate to using your device to locate park geocaches.

This program will teach visitors how to read and understand trail and topographic maps, compass interpretation, and how both of these concepts relate to the modern geocaching. Participants will then practice their newfound skills to locate two park geocaches using a paper map, and one using their mobile device!

Meet: Gazebo at Summit Trailhead

Bring: Charged phone with Geocaching app by Groundspeak Inc, Trail Map (which can be acquired upon check-in at park Headquarters), sunscreen, long pants, good hiking shoes. Optional:  GPS unit.

Cost: Free with park admission. Park admission is free with a Texas State Parks Pass. Day passes can be purchased ahead of time on our website.

Registration: Email Hannah Pickens ahead of time to reserve your spot. This program will be capped at 15 participants
