My name is Mud...or is it... Adobe

As the Largest adobe structures in Texas- Fort Leaton is made of adobe bricks and plaster, come join us to make your own.

Fort Leaton sits atop a small hill overseeing what use to be river front. As the river lived on moving away from the Fort, the building stands still and is considered the largest adobe structure in Texas. Join maintenance rangers as they continue to provide life to the building by plastering its walls and repairing the bricks that have eroded. You can make your mark on the Fort by making your own bricks and plaster. 

  • Meet: Fort Leaton courtyard
  • Accessibility: Parking will be available at the parking lot of Fort Leaton.
  • What to expect: We will get our hands dirty by using clay, sand and dirt to learn what it takes to make adobe bricks and plaster.
  • What to bring:
    • Water
    • Sun protection (sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, etc.)
    • Clothing you don’t mind getting dirty (Long sleeves, pants, socks, closed-toed shoes/boots)
  • Fees: Program is included in park entry fees- $5 per person ages 13 and older, 12 and under are free. Register at one of our Visitor Centers- Fort Leaton State Historic Site or Barton Warnock Visitor Center. Admission is free with Texas State Park Pass. Programs are subject to cancellation in the event of inclement weather. Cancellations will be announced on Fort Leaton State Historic Site, or you can call park headquarters. Please make RESERVATIONS ahead of time.
