Join our ranger for a walk down the Hoodoos trailhead to the Rio Grande and learn about the geological oddities of the Chihuahuan desert landscape.
A hike along Hoodoos Trail is a great introduction to the wider Chihuahuan Desert landscape. A variety of cacti and wildflowers provide rich habitat for a number of animal species, set against the backdrop of the Hoodoos formations and the Río Grande valley. Leashed pets allowed. This hike covers a moderate 1.3-mile loop.
- Meet: Hoodoos trailhead
- Accessibility: Parking will be available at the Hoodoos parking lot. Restrooms are available at the Arenosa Campground; use the facilities before attending the program. There are multiple difficulties of trails ranging from easy to moderate. Trip hazards, snakes, and additional hazards are possible.
- What to expect: We will get our hands dirty by using clay, sand and dirt to learn about Weathering, Erosion, Deposition and how it shapes our desert landscape at the Hoodoos.
- What to bring:
- Water
- Bug spray
- Sun protection (sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, etc.)
- Protective clothing (Long sleeves, pants, socks, closed-toed shoes/boots)
- Fees: Program is included in park entry fees- $5 per person ages 13 and older, 12 and under are free. Register at one of our Visitor Centers- Fort Leaton State Historic Site or Barton Warnock Visitor Center. Admission is free with Texas State Park Pass.
