Rock N' Rolling at the Hoodoos

Join our ranger for a walk down the Hoodoos trailhead to the Rio Grande and learn about the geological oddities of the Chihuahuan desert landscape.

A hike along Hoodoos Trail is a great introduction to the wider Chihuahuan Desert landscape. A variety of cacti and wildflowers provide rich habitat for a number of animal species, set against the backdrop of the Hoodoos formations and the Río Grande valley. Leashed pets allowed. This hike covers a moderate 1.3-mile loop.

  • Meet: Hoodoos trailhead
  • Accessibility: Parking will be available at the Hoodoos parking lot. Restrooms are available at the Arenosa Campground; use the facilities before attending the program. There are multiple difficulties of trails ranging from easy to moderate. Trip hazards, snakes, and additional hazards are possible. 
  • What to expect: We will get our hands dirty by using clay, sand and dirt to learn about Weathering, Erosion, Deposition and how it shapes our desert landscape at the Hoodoos.
  • What to bring:
    • Water
    • Bug spray
    • Sun protection (sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, etc.)
    • Protective clothing (Long sleeves, pants, socks, closed-toed shoes/boots)
  • Fees: Program is included in park entry fees- $5 per person ages 13 and older, 12 and under are free. Register at one of our Visitor Centers- Fort Leaton State Historic Site or Barton Warnock Visitor Center. Admission is free with Texas State Park Pass. 
  • Programs are subject to cancellation in the event of inclement weather. Cancellations will be announced on Big Bend Ranch State Park Page or you can call park headquarters.
