Sun, August 16, 2026
Lydia Pagel
(915) 444-9100

On hot summer days it can feel like an oven outside. Learn how to harvest that energy to actually cook with!

In this fun cooking class, you will learn how to build a solar oven out of recycled materials you may have lying around your house already. You will then use your homemade oven to make lunch; yum!

We have a capacity of 10 individuals for this class, so be sure to reserve your spot ahead of time by calling the office at (915) 444-9100.

Menu: pizza with your choice of toppings and cookies for dessert. *If you have dietary restrictions, please let us know when you make your reservation.*

Fee: $8.00 per adult 13 years of age and older, $3.00 for Texas State Park Pass holders, and $1.00 for children between the ages of 5 and 12.

Bring: water and comfortable clothes. We will be both inside and outside for this class, so check the weather before coming out and dress appropriately.

We will provide: all cooking utensils, ingredients, solar oven supplies, and instructions.

Meeting location: The Visitor Center in the Tom Mays Unit. When you enter Tom Mays, pull into the first parking lot to the right and go into the main visitor center to get your entrance permit. The event will be in the Interpretive building next door.

Directions:  From Westside on I-10, take exit 6 & travel east towards mountains for 3.8 miles. Park entrance will be on the left.
