El Camino Real- Connecting Heritage
Sat, October 19, 2024
From game trails to highways, El Camino Real shaped the landscape and culture of Texas in ways we still see today.
El Camino Real, also known as The King's Highway, was the first road in Texas. Built by Spain to connect New Spain's northern lands to those in modern-day Mexico, the road gave Spain the ability to move goods and people around New Spain faster and more reliably. After Spanish rule, the road continued to be of great importance, and it lives on today in our current road maps and heritage. We will take a look at how El Camino Real shaped Texas' infrastructure and how the flow of ideas up and down the road shaped the culture of Texas.
Program takes place at El Camino Real Visitors Center.
Program is free with park entrance ($4 per person, free for kids 12 & under).
