First Day Poetry Hike

Spend a morning reading and composing poetry in nature while hiking Government Canyon State Natural Area.

The event begins with a short discussion about and reading of poetry. Then, we’ll hike the 1.25 mile Discovery Trail, stopping and writing along the way.

Who Is Invited:

This hike is open to ages 14 and up. Minors must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. No pets please.

Where to Meet:

Meet at the Rainwater Tower outside the Visitor Center. Lots A & B will have the closest parking. The hike will leave promptly at 9:30 am, so please plan to arrive a little early. The hike on the Discovery Trail will be about 1.25 miles on a compacted crushed granite surface.

How to Prepare:

Though the activity is free, entrance fees to the Natural Area do apply. We often fill to capacity. To ensure entrance and save time at the Fee Booth, please pre-purchase and print out a day pass. Please note: reserving a Day Pass does not guarantee a spot for you on the hike! The hike is limited to the first 10 participants to check-in with the hike leader.

Dress for hiking outdoors. Wear layers that can be taken on or off as the day's weather changes. Wear sturdy, comfortable shoes and bring a journal for writing. Bring a snack, at least 1 liter of water per person and a towel or pad for sitting on along the trail.

If ADA assistance is required, please request modifications using this form, or email accessibility@tpwd.texas.gov at least 2 weeks in advance.

Cancellation:

This program is weather-dependent and subject to cancellation. Check trail conditions by calling GCSNA's main office at 210-688-9055, or go to the GCSNA webpage, Instagram, or Facebook.
