Bat Talk and Walk

Join our special guests from Bat Conservation International, who will discuss bats and their importance. Following the presentation, we will walk the trails with a handheld bat detector to see which bat species are in the air above us.

This event begins at 7 pm with a presentation in the Amphitheater. All ages are welcome. Minors must be accompanied by their parent or guardian. No pets please. Lot C will be the closest parking. There is a gravel path leading from the parking lot to the amphitheater, a distance of about 120'. The amphitheater is near an accessible restroom.

There is no registration required for the bat talk.

After the bat talk, up to 40 participants can join a bat walk on the trails, led by BCI representatives with bat detectors. The walk will cover less than a mile, but will be on unpaved, rocky trails. Registration for the walk (not the talk) is required by contacting Lisa.Cole@tpwd.texas.gov

This is a public program intended for families. If you would like to bring a group for a program at Government Canyon, please contact the Park Interpreter at Lisa.Cole@tpwd.texas.gov to schedule at a different time.

Though the event is free, entrance fees to the Natural Area do apply. We often fill to capacity. To ensure entrance and save time at the Fee Booth, please pre-purchase and print out a day pass. There is often a line at the fee booth; arrive early to get to your activity on time.

Dress for hiking outdoors, in layers that can be added or removed as the weather changes. Comfortable shoes and bug spray are recommended. Seating in the amphitheater is on stone benches, bring a stadium seat or blanket if desired.

If ADA assistance is required, please email accessibility@tpwd.texas.gov at least 2 weeks in advance.

This program is weather-dependent and subject to cancellation. Check trail conditions by calling GCSNA's main office at 210-688-9055, or go to the GCSNA webpage, Instagram, or Facebook.
