Eclipse Legends, Lore and Science Hike

Join dedicated volunteers for a special edition of our monthly First Saturday Guided Hike.

Did you know that Government Canyon State Natural Area will be in the perfect path for viewing the total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024? Join us to explore how eclipses were regarded through the ages.

We will travel through time with a voyage to the dinosaur tracks, a visit to one of our founding family’s homes and a stop at the site of an indigenous people’s encampment. Along the way, we will discuss eclipse fact and fiction. The stuff legends are made of!

Hike distance will be approximately 6 miles covering uneven terrain and moderate elevation changes. Open to ages 10 and older. Minors must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. No pets please.

Please arrive no later than 7:30 am to give you time to park and meet us at the Visitor Center for the hike. Registration is NOT required for this hike, but it is limited to the first 30 participants. Though the hike is free, all Natural Area entrance fees apply. To save time on crowded days and ensure entrance, please pre-purchase and PRINT OUT a Day Pass. Please know that making a day pass reservation does not guarantee a spot on this guided hike, it is limited to the first 30 people to sign in. Our staff can direct you to a solo hiking route if needed.

Check in with your guides at the rainwater harvesting tower at the Visitor Center. The Natural Area can be busy. Front gates open at 7:00 am.

Dress for hiking outdoors. Comfortable shoes, sunscreen, bug spray and a hat are recommended. Bring at least 2 liters of water per person and a snack.

If ADA assistance is required, please email accessibility@tpwd.texas.gov at least 2 weeks in advance.

This program is subject to cancellation. Should there be inclement weather, please check Natural Area conditions by calling GCSNA's main office at 210-688-9055, or go to GCSNA’s website, Instagram, or Facebook page.
